Teachers in Rhode Island currently maintain their certification by showing evidence of continuous professional development. Creating an IPlan and reviewing the IPlan of a peer is a unit-wide assignment in the School of Education for all student teachers. The steps below are designed to guide you through this process so that we can complete it efficiently.
Complete the form based on one of the lessons you taught last week. Be sure to write down specific evidence from either your lesson plan or your memory of your enactment for each assessment you give.
Use a highlighter to identify areas of your teaching/lesson that were either below standard or that you feel needs improvement
Synthesize your review by completing the following table as best your can:
What is the need?
How will improvement help your students?
How will improvement help your school?

I need to understand the different learning styles of students in my first period biology course
Students will comprehend the lecture materials, which will lead to motivated students.
If the teaching style incorporates the different learning modalities, more students will understand the information, which may lead to better NECAP results.

I. Professional Development Goal
My goal is to create an environment that is conducive to learning. In order to do this, I have to obtain a better understanding of the different learning styles of my students. I also have to get a better handle at maintaining order with students so that their focus is on me and the lecture material. I will obtain a better understanding of the different learning styles by conducting an interest inventory. The interest inventory is a list of questions that the student will answer. The interest inventory will tell me many things about the students, including their hobbies (music, art, football, ...). I will also ask the students their preference on how information needs to be presented during the lecture/activities. With this information, I will be able to incorporate the students' multiple intelligences into my daily lectures/activities. By incorporating multiple intelligences (ribt 4,8) in my teaching, students will be able to absorb and understand the content, which will result in improved student achievement on tests, including NECAP. I will maintain order of student behavior by creating a hook at the beginning of each period. The hook will link into the topic of the lecture. I will utilize the interest inventories of the students to create an appropriate hook that will link to an engaging lecture/activity. The hook will entail a journal entry or a quick video followed by an engaging talk. If I can quell any chaos at the start of the period by creating a good hook to the lecture, I feel I will have the student's attention for the period. If I can I transition the hook with an engaging activity, I feel the students will be able to absorb the information without getting off track. (ribit 6) This teaching style will lead to a better teaching style, improved student achievement, and as a result will lead to a better learning environment.
My goal is create a environment that is conducive to student learning by tapping into the multiple intelligences of my students and maintaining order during my lecture. If I can accomplish this, my teaching style will allow me to make a connection with each one of my students during my lecture/activities. If my teaching style allows me to make a connection with all of my students, then my students will have a better chance a understanding and absorbing the lecture material. The changes in my teaching style can benefit the students with improved student achievement through tests. The school district also benefits by having a higher amount of students doing well on the NECAP tests.
Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:
Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.
II. Professional Development Plan
Conferences/Conventions
I will attend the annual National Quality Education Conference. I will take a couple of courses on how to implement strategies that incorporate the multiple intelligences into my teaching style. I will see if there are additional ways to find out the interests of my students and their preferred modality of learning. I will learn how to best reach out to students who have a natural intelligence, a musical intelligence, athletic intelligence. The course at this conference will allow me to make connections with students as a teach high concept scientific principles. Once these connections are created, the students will more easily absorb and understand the information, which will result in improved student achievement and NECAP results.
Peer Support
In addition to creating interesting hooks at the start of the period, I will reach out to my peer teachers (teachers with many years of experience) for guidance on how to maintain order for the whole period. I will work with a mentor teacher that will help me grow and better understand how to foster a mutually respectful relationship between the students and a teacher. The relationship with the mentor allows me to obtain best practices and incorporate these pearls into my teaching style. As a result, the students will be more focused during the period. If the students are more focused, they will readily absorb and comprehend the content. Improved comprehension will lead to improved student achievement and better NECAP results.
